They know him and don't want to think one of "theirs" could do anything perverse. Nobody does, but that's the thing, isn't it? Dude, I love "Chinatown" too, but that "free pass" thing? Is supposed to be a metaphor, full stop. It's supposed to "forgive" him "Goonies 3" or a twenty-year-old model girlfriend, not real crimes. I understand that, I suppose, but I would hope I'd never sign on for such a thing. WTF is that? The thin fuchsia line?OTOH, if somebody argued that "Chinatown" is no longer great because its director is a "baby-raper", I'd be right there with Cuaron et al. I dare them to ask David Simon for a signature on that...the servers might be down for a while while their ears stop ringing.

So come, my friends, be not afraid/We are so lightly here/It is in love that we are made; In love we disappear

I'm guessing that for the most part they are completely misled as to the nature of the crime and the so-called miscarriage of justice -- there's so much misinformation out there, particularly as a result of the documentary.

Agreed.

Yeah, I am sure there are those who have not even read the girl's testimony and those who would say we are "only" getting her side of the story. I know, given the atmosphere of the '70s and the fact that he had just gone through the horrific murder of his pregnant wife, I was inclined to think it was not a terrible crime. I recall getting the impression that they were both high and that he thought she was of age and that her mom pimped her out. But that isn't what happened at all--what happened was rape.

this mess was yours / now your mess is mine

I was heartbroken by a quote from Whoopi Goldberg saying he should be forgiven.

That and differentiating between "rape" and "rape-rape."

If what happened is only "rape," I'm terrified of Whoopi's definition of "rape-rape."

Culture of Rape? You're soaking in it.

Truer words were never spoken.

Just because someone is A. old, B. had a bad life, C. is a good artist or D. you know them, is not a reason they should go unpunished for a crime they were convicted of. Period.

Now let us crush something soft and watch it fountain blood. That is a girlish thing to want to do, yes?

No, absolutely not. That was just my take on why so many artists signed on. If he were my friend, I think I'd just have to say "Please don't ask me about that."

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

I recall when a bunch of artists signed a petition because Ray Charles (was it?) was imprisoned for tax evasion. At the time I was mystified because this was a serious crime and it didn't sound like there was any doubt about guilt or the general facts of the case.

Yeah, it doesn't make you awful(necessarily) but it doesn't make you Lenny Bruce...who made his own problems worse with drugs anyway.
