I thought prior to this movie he was absolutely over the top and one-note. I didn't even understand WTF he was coming from. I feel like at this point, I better understand the character. They added some layers.
Beau explained some things to me which also helped.
So, the reason to see it in 3D is the Winter Soldier preview in front of it. The reason not to see it is everything else, because I still think 3D is ugh.
I like 3D, but this movie has almost no 3D at all. You could barely tell they did anything to it at all, which is disappointing since it could have been very cool with some added depth.
I really enjoyed the movie. I liked the first movie more than I thought I would, but the trailers for this one didn't really excite me too much. But ten minutes in, it became clear this movie was about
ELVES WITH SPACESHIPS
and I was in because why not.
I also loved the
multi-world fight scene. I'd never seen anything like it (there may have been something like it in Jumper, now that I think about it), and it felt like the filmmakers had seized upon the opportunity to do something new and interesting and had a lot of fun with it.
The
Chris Evans cameo
was hilarious. ALSO! The wonderful moment where
Thor hangs up his hammer on the coat hanger
was improvised. Bless you, Chris Hemsworth.

His reaction to
Frigga's death
was well done.

Thank you for that info, P-C! You and Hems have made me smile!
eta context and clarity.
Loved the
Capt America cameo
so much.
Chris Evans playing Loki mocking Cap
was fabulous.
Something in the credits made me laugh -
Stan Lee
was credited as himself. Given where he appeared, I snerked out loud.
eta Crap, is that a spoiler? I mean he always cameos. Screwit, I'll s font it for the sake of argument.
Hey, everyone! I have this terrific plan! How about
the bad guy lets himself captured, with the idea of breaking out and causing chaos!
As you can see, it's a completely original plan and nothing could possibly go wrong with it.
I think Loki was shortchanged--as was Barton!--in the Avengers movie by the shortening of the scene between the two of them in the secret hideout. A squidge more motivation is revealed--though not much
Loki's motivation in Thor confused me. I still liked him, but yes, I was confused as to where he was coming from. I liked him better in Avengers, but I do think this movie really fleshed him out. Having said that, I have a hug weakspot for his type of character so I'm not shocked I love him.
About his motivation -
I recently read a Thor/Loki fic (and I usually don't do incest but I love her writing), that sort of filled in some blanks for me. I think that being told that you are what everyone calls a monster must be a horrifying discovery, but it's one that I would expect to go a bit more inward than outward. And we, as an audience, have had to fill in a lot there.
Ha ha ha, this can be nothing but good news: [link]
Beau had the opposite take. He explained to me that what we (as viewers) were supposed to pick up on is that Loki and Thor
each have characteristics from their parents (Thor's parents biologically). Their mother taught Loki the manipulation of visions, while their father has characteristics that each of them share: the boldness and morally centeredness rule that is Thor's way of leading (now that he is more mature). While Loki, rightfully, mentions the viciousness with which Odin won wars and conquered his enemies in the past. Odin spoke to his two sons differently, minimizing (or aggrandizing) when the need arose (e.g. humans aren't worth your time; you aren't suitable for the throne)
.
wrt Loki and his issues
he's a frost giant, right? but there's a scene where he turns into a baby in front of Odin's eyes, I assumed, as a sort of "love me and take me home gesture". I did always assume that Loki preferred Frigga, both because of her magic and his natural magic talent, but also because of temperament. But I don't understand how he did the magic baby trick if the Jotun don't naturally all have magic. He'd never met Frigga at that point.
