Buffista Movies 7: Brides for 7 Samurai
A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
Beau and I saw "Silver Linings Playbook" this evening after a day of watching "Downton Abbey."
I liked the movie quite a lot, but it doesn't feel like OSCAR category to me. Jennifer Lawrence was fantastic in the film and I think Bradley Cooper rose to the challenge. This movie reminds me of "Little Miss Sunshine" a bit (not so much the plot though) in that it is an enjoyable movie, a good movie, one that did well come awards season, but I don't think of it as Best Picture material.
The character development in SLP was strong, the characters were well-written and I would say generally that while the movie was a bit predictable, some of the dialogue most definitely was not. So I give the writers credit.
Beau liked the movie and was laughing at it from the beginning. That surprised me a lot because I thought he was going to hate it. He said this felt like an independent movie (which I guess it does - except for all the star power).
I liked it quite a lot. I don't think I liked it better than Lincoln, but I would definitely qualify it as Best Picture material, and might have voted for it in any number of years. But I always like it when a quirky "indie" dramedy gets some play - I get rather sick of the big sad Oscar movies.
So.. . JJ Abrams - directing Star Wars VII.
Oh dear.
Huh. I feel like being so involved with the Star Trek reboot should somehow serve as a conflict of interest for him to be involved in the Star Wars franchise. But I guess the whole Star Trek vs. Star Wars thing is pretty arbitrary.
Doesn't the guy sleep?
So.. . JJ Abrams - directing Star Wars VII.
Rilly.
I have mixed feelings. I mean, I'm a J.J. Abrams fan, and I loved the new Star Trek, but I'm not sure about an Abrams Star Wars.
Doesn't the guy sleep?
There's that too.
JJ Abrams - directing Star Wars VII.
Oh, no! I don't think this is good news.
There are other people out there besides Joss and JJ Abrams, folks!
Sounds like an improvement to me. But I like the only Abrams movie I've been interested in, and despised the new three, as close to them as I got.
