If anyone goes to a screening or opening weekend show of The Hobbit I'd love a "should I take the kids" review.
I'm seeing it Thursday, will report back.
I found Russell Crowe's inability to hit the notes to be distracting beyond the point where his acting would have mattered. I just wanted to run up to the screen, pat him on the diaphragm and shout "SING FROM HERE DAMNIT." You know that thing in every high school musical ever where one kid in the case who can't hit a low (or high) note just shouts the line instead? Audiences should not have to put up with that in a professional fucking production.
To be fair to Amanda Seyfried, Cosette is sort of a problematic character in that she is necessary, but doesn't as an adult have a very compelling story
Yeah, I'm honestly not sure what an actress can bring to adult Cosette other than a pretty voice, which Seyfried has. She's just not a very interesting character.
Plus - doesn't Russell Crowe have a band that actually goes out and performs??

I assume the songs he performs in his band are written in a key he can sing.
But. . . technique, shouldn't he have some?
Shouting is a legit bar-band technique!
I actually prefer shout singing to vibrato, but I realize that is my prejudice. I can't even deal with Phantom because Sarah Brightman. She is number 4 on my most hated things list.
To bring it back to movies, my most hated thing is when people take a song like Grease's 'There Are Worse Things..." and turn it into a crazy showcase belt number.

I agree, Cosette has always been more plot device than character. Seyfried's singing in that clip just doesn't help with a song I already didn't care much for. (Though, thinking about it, all of Cosette's songs are at the bottom of the list for me.) I don't have an opinion of her one way or another as an actress.

In Phantom? Or overall?
Dying to know #1-3.
Re:
The Hobbit.
Rereading, I find myself wondering how they are getting multiple movies, let alone 3-hour ones.
Apparently the unexpected party goes on for 45 minutes.
I guess that's what happens when you don't plan well.
