Buffista Movies 7: Brides for 7 Samurai
A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
RDJ continually provides me bang for my movie going buck. I'm a happy little consumer. I think he's sexy and funny as shit, and makes a much better action hero than I'd ever have predicted (even though we don't see *him* doing most of the action).
Hunger Games poster put together from bunches of puzzle pieces. That's the magic of the internet. Someone does the grunt work for you.

MUPPETS! We just saw the new Muppet Movie. Yep, still want to be a regular on the Muppet Show when I grow up.

Gah, he SO is. I even liked him when he was on Ally McBeal back in the day. (Shut up.)
Y'all will love this supercut of 2011 movies:

(Possibly there's some 2010 in there, too...)
Tep, so did I. YOU ARE NOT ALONE.
Sure dude, that was a calculated PR move... because bisexual male actors had so many more opportunities than straight ones back in 1980s Hollywood...) I'm glad he overcame his addiction problems and got his life back on track; I just haven't really enjoyed a performance of his since Home for the Holidays.
Yeah. And he NEVER appears to have a strong appreciation for the fine forms of his male co-stars. Mmm-hmm.
But I like watching him on screen, even when he's phoning it in, because he's got charisma.
And there are enough stories of him being a mensch without the publicity machines around that I've got a fondness for him that's at about the Keanu level.
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
was basically non-stop awesome. Something cool was always happening! It's over two hours long, but it doesn't feel it. The plot is just window dressing, and there are some decent character moments, but it's mostly just interested in being a great, fun action movie, and I can respect that. I like what this review says:
Bird shows us all his action setpieces not from the outside, saying "Isn’t this an awesome thing to see?!" but from the inside, saying, "Isn’t this an awful thing to be caught up in?"
Everyone's raving about the
skyscraper scene,
and it's definitely a highlight, the kind where you're having physical reactions to everything that goes wrong, but, holy shit, the
car factory (or was it a parking garage?)
was one of the coolest sequences I've seen in a while. So wonderfully choreographed.
We didn't get the
Dark Knight Rises
prologue, but we got a trailer! The movie looks awesome. Can't wait.

I will grant that it doesn't seem to be a Luke Evans-esque career driven dive back into the closet given how persistent he is about promoting slashy subtext in his movies with Jude Law. My guess is antsyness about the possibility of Susan Levin finding some shared names when comparing their respective ex lists.
I'm impressed with how much gayer Game of Shadows is than the original Sherlock Holmes, Way to up an ante, man.
I liked it. Not as much as the first one, but it certainly wasn't the level of Iron Man -> Iron Man 2 disappointment. It was more emotional than the first, and more explosive, but less mysterious. Also, more depressing.
But still amusing and charming. Good chemistry between the leads, and lovely set dressing and costuming.
I think I'm in the minority in liking how Ritchie does action, but I think the way he shifts time and focus is really evocative of the distorting effects of adrenaline to me, and I find myself more on the edge of my seat as a result.
The gimmick of talking through fight scenes to come is used again here, but I think it was both used too much and better, simultaneously. I get it. You're playing with it some, but I get it, thanks.

Hmmm. I can live with that. Iron Man 2 didn't make me sad like Spider-Man 3, but I also didn't buy the DVD (unlike Iron Man, which I think I bought the day the DVD was released).

Exxxxcelllllllent.

Saw SH2 today, and yeah, that was super-gay. I enjoyed it, but mostly because I find RDJ endlessly charming. I mostly can't stand Guy Ritchie's movies, but the Sherlock Holmes movies are exceptions.
Despite the good press, I just can't go see a Tom Cruise movie, though I will re-watch Minority Report now and again.
The TKDR trailer was awesome.
