'The Train Job'

Spike's Bitches 44: It's about the rules having changed.

[NAFDA] Spike-centric discussion. Lusty, lewd (only occasionally crude), risqué (and frisqué), bawdy (Oh, lawdy!), flirty ('cuz we're purty), raunchy talk inside. Caveat lector.

You were a wrong baby who grew up wrong. The wrong kind of wrong. It's better you hear it from a friend.

oh for goodness sakes. What does Jesus have against convent schools?

They're run by Catholics, I'm guessing.

Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont, open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant. Adam Schlesinger, z''l

Yep. Elsie, by the way, has been reading about the Inquisition and is convinced that she'll be tortured.

"It didn't taste good. It tasted soooo horrible. It tasted like....a vodka martini." - Matilda

I think Alice Waters has been a hugely influential force in moving towards more locally grown food and home cooking, but she came off as unrealistic about the amount of time involved. Does anyone really think priorities can be changed enough that a single mother with a demanding job can spend 30 minutes, plus clean up, to make breakfast? Yes, it's a symptom of a society without traditional family support, little employer support for family time and reduced incomes, but that's a lot to ask of food.

I could see her earning repeated slaps upside the head with the cluestick.

oh joy! Oh Rapture ! I have a brain!

But that's the point, ginger. It isn't that a single mom can make that change -- the change has to be bigger. Seriously, if I could buy yogurt that had sugar not HfCS in it, I'd consider it a great victory. I know what sugar does to me, I have no clue what HFCS does to me. And I know what it does to the planet.

And -- culturally we have to change. Even in this economy I know a lot of ex-geeks that won't go back to the world that means they don't have time to sit with their family and eat a meal.

There are plenty! (The Puget Consumers Coop doesn't stock anything with HfCS, and they have a lot of yogurt.)

'Course, if you can track down a maker, it's easy to roll your own.

Safeway is my main store -- i guess I'll have to try reading again -- last time I looked at the labels there is was still either no cal sweeteners or hfcs.

Calli: My people have a saying. A man who trusts can never be betrayed, only mistaken.Avon: Life expectancy among your people must be extremely short.

Safeway has a "health food" section with yogurts with natural flavors at high prices. But (lower labor than making your own) you can buy plain at Safeway (fat free or not) then add your own flavors. If you want sugars, mix with the HFCS-free jam of your choice, or with fruit juice concentrates.(Plain fat-free Yogurt with a little frozen OJ and a splash of vanilla is of the yum). Or mix with natural fruit or whatever you please.
