IOmememeN, I'm desperate for some relative peace and quiet. I explained to my mother that I needed to do some work this morning. Meaning, I need to sit at the computer and do some research and I need to be able to think.
I SO feel your pain. My mother wouldn't let me read a fucking book without talking to me. I once was reading a book with my iPod on, which I thought sent a clear signal that I wanted to read without interruption and she STILL had to say random shit like "oh, I like this wine".
Once, I wasn't feeling well and went back to the room. She came in a few hours later and I was reading. She kept talking to me, and I would acknowledge her and finally said in a snotty tone "do you just want to read your book?" I said "YES! thank you!" And then she got huffy and was slamming things and glaring at me. I swear that she went to bed early that night just to turn off the lights (I of course had a reading lamp, so it was fine)

My officemate is a Democrat and also a hunter, and thus owns several guns. I've got a 9mm Sig Sauer--yes, I went with that one because it's the gun Scully uses, but she's got itty bitty hands, too--and my friends who know my liberal ways are always a bit baffled. But it lives in a case with a lock under my desk when it's not at the range. What I find disturbing is the fact that at 10 yards I could outshoot a bunch of local policemen. but then they did get thrown out of a regional police range competition for being idiots and using the sideways gangster grip. Ah, civic pride.

I shot rifles competetively in high school. My dad still weeps because I gave it up. I enjoy shooting pistols with him at the gun range.
My crazy, 2nd Ammendment Family can't understand why I'm pro-gun control. I tell them it's because I know them.
I don't think guns make people safer, no matter how much enjoyment you get out of them. The statistics just don't bear that out. But damn, they're fun to shoot.

Heh. I know. I used to teach linguistics. It still irritates me that I can't learn a different alphabet. I'm reasonably clever (and not used to being unable to understand things :P )
