'War Stories'

Buffista Music 4: Needs More Cowbell!

There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.

Bob's learned to live with tragedy, but he knows that this tragedy is one that won't ever leave him or get better.

It's also on Amazon's mp3 download thingie. And ... I think it was available somewhere else but I don't remember where.

Oh, that other place? His website. [link] Which, I think, is buying an actual, physical disk. Dunno. I just want the legal files, so...

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

There are other good tracks on that as well...

Yeah. I think my fave is "Career Opportunities", covered by the Sex Clark Five.

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

I haven't listened to it in years, but I remember liking the Smithereens track as well as Katrina's.

"And that's why God Almighty gave us fire insurance and the public defender".

Mark Linkous news took me by surprise. I love Sparklehorse.

And re: what's the thing that I like most/most important to me in the music I listen to:

0. Ontological honesty. It should be there so I'll listen to it.
1. Bass.
2. Melody.
3. Lyrics.

Huh. I tend not to notice the bass so much, except when it's doing something weird, like in Iggy Pop's "New Values" or much of Joy Division, where the bass plays the melody at a much higher pitch than normal.

"And that's why God Almighty gave us fire insurance and the public defender".

I didn't either, until I noticed that most of the songs/bands I love give an important role to bass. And, disabling the bass on some songs helped to realize how important and necessary this instrument is.

Shir, do you like Morphine (the band, not the drug)? They tended to use just a bass with two strings, and no guitar. Drums and one guy playing two saxophones simultaneously rounded out the band.
