Interviews with Serge Ladouceur, the show's lighting designer, bear out this is by design, and not coincidence. I had an awful thought earlier-- knowing Kripke's habit of bringing the pain, and of adding one more level of fuckedupedness to the Winchesters' lives just as you think they can't get any more fucked up, do you think there's any chance that Sam would in fact end up saying yes?

Yes, I've just been trying to figure out the scenario. It would be to save Dean, but how does saying yes do that? I think it's a real possibility esp if Lucy makes the right promises.
