The confrontation with John, with Dean playing mediator, is so powerful. DEAN. And later John and Sam finally realizing that they're more alike than either of them imagined.

I think this is true. I think given everything Sam's been through, he's not even willing to think about what it would mean to *want* those kinds of roots and commitments the way he once did. Sadly, I think this is partly because he sees himself as tainted, and hardly a safe bet for anyone who doesn't know what they do about things that go bump in the night.

I did, partially because he had so little patience or wistfulness for the family setup when he got thrust into it. I understand that getting back to Dean is job #1, but there wasn't even a sideways glance at family.
