Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I think they riff on Dean's geekiness and extracurricular interests because it's easy to

I think it would be just as easy to make Sam a bona fide bookworm though, enough that it seems a conscious decision not to talk about it at *all*. I know Dean gets more attention, but I feel that us not knowing what music Sam likes, for instance, is deliberate so we can't actually know if we disagree with Dean or not--we either have to take his word for it, or disagree on principle. No evidence. The only bars of his music we heard were Jason Mann, so that barely even counts.

As for the books, it's a simple way to expand our perception of Dean, who could easily be a gun-wielding boozing pussy hound with a heart of gold and less on the details. But when you add it all up, he's a proper mass of contradictions, instead of the most easy version.

I can't quite decide who's our entry point into the story all the time. In some ways it's all about Dean, but in many ways Dean is all about Sam, and Sam is the closest we'll get to our sort of conventional in a Winchester.

So, in summation, dunno.

I am the fly who dreams of the spider

I can't imagine that John took his boys flying very often, if at all. So I'm more surprised that Dean knew he was afraid of flying. Maybe there was one trip during Sam's Stanford years that Dean got on a plane for a hunt (maybe to get to Sir faster, who was in trouble, and driving the impala just wasn't practical).

I am mean. Those LJ users who spammed me now have their accounts suspended and it fills me with satisfaction.

Well, we don't officially know when Dean got the Impala, do we? Maybe he flew once, when stealing wasn't sufficient (in a way I'm surprised that John would have been okay enough with grand theft auto that the boys seriously think any car is fair game--he's still a rules and regs guy--I have to ponder that a little), to a solo job while Sam was away, and it went so badly John gave him the Impala and bought himself something newer.

Never saying out loud that was the reason, though.

Wow, got excited over two new Mafia AU's. First one was so sweet in how bad the English was, second one was slightly better, but even more disappointing for all the author's notes that made it seem like it would be MORE.

I think I saw one Mafia AU by someone I have author's notes about warning me off. I'm trying to stick with that.

I wish I could make those notes on AO3, though. JeSUS. However, I read stories when I can't parse the summary, so there's no one to blame but me.

There is one true Mafia AU. I should just re-read it when I see another paltry imitation. It's a trope that seems to tend to suck.

scaramouche wrote a new timestamp. I wish there would ever be another large chunk in this universe, but her NY's resolution was two a month! I'm still not over my infatuation with that fic. Pretty much my one true HS AU. And some of the best story-integrated smoking porn I've ever read.

Jollysnidge is chugging along, and I've decided not to hold her foray into Wincest against her, since it's not even remotely affecting her D/C output. I mean, it theoretically might be, but...seriously. Wolf!Dean! Sub!Dean! Yeah, baby.

Because books.

Gen futurefic, and even here the author supposes Sam doesn't really do much for pure pleasure. All work all the time.

Really nice little casefic, though.

Art Crawl!!!

Oh, I'm sure that Dean doesn't think of himself as a geek!

Dean doesn't think of him as most of the things he is--marvellous guy, out of control alcoholic, worthwhile human being, smart, saviour...yet another reason I can't get enough of him. And I love Sam because his mission is to see himself and his world as clearly as possible, but he has Lucifer in his head directly manipulating what he was getting pretty good at...so long ago.

Merry unattached drifter Christmas, kids!

eta, much later: this is a great V-Day manip.

Because books.

Both of them would have had at least one Valentine's Day with a significant other -- Sam with Jess and Dean with Lisa. I wonder how they would have celebrated, if they did.
