Annalee! The script said he was faking it. So you should harsh on Jensen for not doing a good enough job. I know that authorial intent dissipates when the audience interprets the piece, but we can also judge something on the basis of what they intended to convey, and if you think they achieved it.

That seems to mostly work, but not entirely work. Tricia Helfer's ghost stuck around, for instance, and wasn't she cremated? Maybe it's that she wasn't salted? Dunno.
I did find this language from the transcript, and it makes me want to hug them both hard:

I love that episode. I always forget about it, but you really see all of Sam and Dean's interactions differently when you go in knowing they're dealing with a ghost.

On a purely tactical note, if the guys would just use a handgun when facing off against these much-stronger monsters instead of immediately closing to hand-to-hand distance they'd probably end up being thrown into walls and captured a lot less. Most of these things would be a lot easier to stake/stab/decapitate if they had to worry about a couple of shot-out kneecaps or some hollowpoints rattling around in their skulls.

Unless they did what demons do and just keep coming at you. They seem to take dramatically less damage unless you hit them with their weakness.
Also, if Sam and Dean took out every demon efficiently, there would be a lot less action on the show.
Mary was burned to death, so not technically cremated and definitely not salted. And she was a ghost.
Do we know how burnt she was, though? I mean, she died in a fire, but that doesn't have to be as thorough as the destruction of a salt and burn or a cremation.
