It was absolutely not hinted at. Fanon != canon, and people need to get a hold on that. It was never mentioned again, in the show, and in meta, the writers said they were moving on from that part of the boys' relationship. Which they can absolutely undo, but it just makes it less likely that they've been dropping hints of its return this whole time.

Supernatural 2: Why is it our job to save everybody?
[NAFDA]. This is where we talk about the CW series Supernatural! Anything that's aired in the US on TV (including promos) is fair game. No spoilers though — if you post one by accident, an admin will delete it.
That's what I thought! Thank you for the reassurance that I'm not crazy (on this point).
It think it would be very in character for Sam to pick it up, so I won't quibble if we find out he did so. But there's been nothing on screen to suggest it one way or another.
Chilling webclip for next week. Eeps. Squeak. I wonder where it's set in time.
Wow.
It's refreshed my worry about everything, and I really want to hug Castiel.
He's gotta come back from all of this, right? Right?
Oh god, my stomach hurts already.
Also, Mark Shepard is just fantastic. I really could watch him in every show ever .
Amy - and you just might.
It's the truth, sumi.
SOMEONE HOLD ME.
Okay, so I made a decision. Crowley and Cas haven't been working together the whole time (unless they have, and that's how Sam and Samuel got back to earth, but I don't want to dwell on it). Instead, Cas has been on the soul train since he started working with Balthazar's weapons mid-season, since Balty has been all up in souls since The Third Man.
That's what I'm going with for now.
