I am a woman of various inclinations and only some of the time are they to burn everything down in frustration

He said he felt like he'd been hit by a piano, right?

I thought he said planet, but then he didn't take the bottle of relief, so I figure not that bad after all?

Maybe they didn't have access to pain meds as hunters and were used to just bearing whatever they had to bear, but Dean had occasion to get a legal prescription some time during his year with Ben and Lisa and that experience convinced him to keep some handy for emergencies. Sam was surprised because that hadn't been SOP before.

The text is murky, I'm not sure what we are supposed to think.

I love picking at it, though. And reading everyone's takes.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I said piano? Uh, oops.

I'm sure that if they had access to down-low medical procedures (canon as of Appointment In Samarra there's at least one hunter doctor), painkillers were theoretically available.

Obviously, I'm biased. My world revolves around pain relief.

"I make mistakes, but I am on the side of Good," the Golux said, "by accident and happenchance.” – The 13 Clocks, James Thurber

We know canonically Sam broke his wrist at least once. No ER doctor would have sent him away without pain medication.

I can see Winchesters deciding that painkillers would dull hunting skills too much but they can function just fine on whisky.

If he went to an ER, that is.

I function better on opiates than alcohol (I've fought doped up on morphine, but I'd never do it drunk), but I don't know if that applies to everyone.

I am like unto opiates as Dean canonically is with alcohol, tolerance-wise.

"What would it take to get your daughter to stop tweeting about this?"

Sam chose Stanford. But he didn't make it to graduation. Dean raised Sam, if we choose to get that hardcore with his position, and Sam turned into what Dean was. Even went to hell like Dean did. Not promising for Ben.

I just meant that it was possible. Sam chose a different life. Just when he thought he was out, it pulled him back in. But he was out for a little while. Technically back at the wishing well, he could have asked for that life again, but he chose not to go there. He said that wasn't him anymore. That's a change that happened after Stanford though and not while Dean was raising him. When I say "raise", I just mean what we've seen of making sure he eats and tending to the holidays. I still love Sir. But I think Dean would probably be doing less than he did for Sam because of Lisa being present.

I guess my whole point is I don't believe Dean when he said that if he stayed it doomed Ben to the life of hunting and nothing else was possible. I just don't know if Dean really believes that (which he might) or he was saying that as an excuse to give Ben.

eta: Something else I don't understand: Lisa told Dean that she was okay with him being a hunter. She didn't want him to change for her and her solution was for him to go off and be a hunter and she and Ben would be waiting for him when he got back. As long as he came home safe.

That's different than this last episode where Lisa said she couldn't have what she wanted (and therefore wouldn't ask for it) because she wouldn't know if Sam would be calling to tell her Dean was dead. Did that change of position happen because Dean was turned into a vampire and brought that home where he shoved and endangered Ben? Because nothing else changed for Lisa to have a different stance on Dean's profession and her ability to live with it.

Also I like that when Dean said Lisa looked fine, I was thinking, she looks more than fine, dude. She's hot and obviously doing very well without you. I like that she wasn't pining at all.
