I think they're definitive, but they're not exclusive. If you know Smallville, you know that song, and it will never mean anything other than Smallville. If you don't know Smallville, chances are much slimmer that you do know the song.
"Carry On Wayward Son" will never mean anything other than boys to me, but that didn't come about until almost a season into the show, and most people who know the song have no idea.
So not as inextricable.

Huh. I finally got to a place where I could read the article in the scans. So I'm disclosing that I am spoiled for everything in the article now. I knew I would be and I'm fine with being spoiled.
