Dean's farewell letter from S5.

...What I'm doing isn't about giving up John taught us better than that...

When did Dean ever call his father "John"?

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I just miss the Winchester brothers being really emotionally crippled and totally codependent brothers

Aren't they that, though? Sure, it's a different flavour, but they need each other so much right now, and it's completely and utterly impossible for them to have what they want, because they're just not equipped.

You know what I adore about that letter? It's grammatically correct with no spelling mistakes. I hate when authors mess up Dean's written English and leave Sam's pristine.

Because books.

I thought about that, too, but maybe it's because he's addressing both Sam and Bobby?

And Cass, I think it may be. I hope so. I'm definitely pumped for whatever answers we get this week.

But it sounds like him! They totally got the Dean voice right, and proved he can too spell! Very nice.

There's no punctuation in the letter. No periods anywhere. Unless it's just that the scan didn't pick them up.

"What would it take to get your daughter to stop tweeting about this?"

Mr Boombastic. God, he's so pretty. It's unreal.

My brain is now mush. I concur about the look at :17. I don't know if it's the expressions or the freckles that get me more in that vid.

The video really showcases one thing that JA always remembers that some actors forget which is to get his eyes in character. He puts the emotion right there in the eyes and sometimes that is all the difference.

I am the fly who dreams of the spider

I think it was Eclipse where the author had Dean do a typo, but he caught it and fixed it immediately. I liked that. It allowed for human foibles without making him an idiot.

I think even worse than Dean's seeming illiteracy in fiction is Sam's creepy scientific glee with complete lack of social skills and sense of propriety. I read a fic or two in the past several weeks where he was simply oblivious and creepy about Dean and Cas' relationship slash and even pre-slash, or even gen, and-- yeah, I think it was a reverse bang where Cas was being made a freak and feeding Dean soup, and Sam was all dreamily leaning on his hand watching them like a David Attenborough documentary. I've read several fics with that Sam personality, and it's freaking me the f*** out. season 6 Sam isn't even that gross.

Good point. He always calls him Dad. He always refers to him as Dad. It took me out of the letter. He only calls him John if he is talking to the young John who would freak out if he called him Dad. There has probably been another time when he called him John but just to clarify who he was talking about.

Cas was being made a freak and feeding Dean soup

Let's be clear--Cas was feeding Dean with his mouth and Sam thought it was charming and something he could watch. That was kinda weird all round.

I can't say I noticed punctuation missing in the scan, because it was small. If someone picks up the book they'll have to say for sure.

Dean calling John John to Bobby doesn't ping me at all. And the way I parsed the letter was that the first two paras weren't targeted at Sam, although that's not precise.

Bob's learned to live with tragedy, but he knows that this tragedy is one that won't ever leave him or get better.

Aren't they that, though? Sure, it's a different flavour, but they need each other so much right now, and it's completely and utterly impossible for them to have what they want, because they're just not equipped.

They aren't, for me. I mean they are totally crippled and dependent on each other but I don't think either of them necessarily wants to be with the other right now. I like them broken but damn it, they are doing it together.

Right now it feels more like their relationship with John early on where there's clearly a dysfunctional relationship but then they drive off in separate cars. Even if Sam and Dean are both in the Impala.

My heart wants what it wants. And it wants broken Winchesters who might die but they are going to damn well go out side by side.
