I have this story in my head where Gabriel runs off to what-will-be-Europe, and eventually runs into some Germanic tribes, and they start calling him Loki, but you can't just have a trickster. A trickster needs context, other supernatural beings to trick, so the whole mythology builds up, with him as the seed. And, of course, once you hit critical belief mass (under the American Gods theory), you get your gods.

I liked the idea that Gabe killed him, but if we could get a Loki back, that would be cool. Especially a pissed off one.
Especially since he called "witness protection," it does seem like he was suggesting more of a "hide in plain sight" strategy than creating a new persona.
And yeah, getting Loki back would be a lot of fun. Although I think he would be angriest at Gabriel, who isn't there to take revenge on.

Gabriel/Loki question: Was Loki always Gabriel? Or did Gabriel kill him and take his place? Anyone read any interesting speculation on that front?
I think it's more elegant if Gabriel was always Loki and the other gods just never figured out that One of These Things Is Not Like the Others.
Of course, an interesting possibility might be that Gabriel's vessel, instead of being a human being, was the actual Norse god.

Then you have to wonder why Loki would believe in angels and give consent to possession. Could be quite the crisis of faith and rebellion against his father.

His father Laufey? In the mythology, Loki is Odin's blood brother, not his adopted son like in the comic books.
