I can kind of see it, if they used to bed down in the living room when they were kids, that could still seem like the right place to sleep even if there were more reasonable alternatives.

Around that ep, it feels like there were a lot of scenes where they'd given up going to bed properly, e.g. in sleep clothes and under the covers. I fanwank that they were up late researching and simply crashed downstairs out of convenience.
