There's also the pain that would come to Amelia and Claire if Jimmy were given back to them, only for him to get pulled back into the Winchester's orbit, not to mention their own potential fridging.

Exactly. Best leave them as is, having made peace with their loss. Just being family to a vessel of a promoted angel is a legitimate danger.

Yeah, that was the one thing that really bugged. They met briefly, don't know each other terribly well, but it wasn't like it they had met at a dinner party. It was a seriously intense couple of days. I have to rewatch The Rapture to see if Jimmy knew their names because Castiel did.
