Yes, he needs to learn an important life lesson about how to lie. He either needs to say he mailed the application by U.S. mail and it was returned; his crazy neighbor keeps stealing packages; or someone died.

I am a bad person too, because when my cousin's wife's grandson killed himself, that's what I thought about him. It's a terrible thing for her friends and family.

It is always a grandmother who dies in my experience (when students are lying). My sister (a professor) and I used to keep a running count of how deadly final exam week was for grandmothers v. grandfathers, and it was easily 10:1.
