We are in NYC and we found us a very wonderful Scola for lunch! Even better yet, when I emailed about the hip locally-sourced hot dog joint we had in mind, Tom said "ooh, right next door to the comics store!"
Which I believe translates as "SCORE".

Plan what to do, what to wear (you can never go wrong with a corset), and get ready for the next BuffistaCon.

Parking in the Quarter is a bitch, so I'd recommend against a car. There are local car rental places on Canal if something comes up. Cabs are a good option around here.
although, when you call for a cab, do it from your hotel. We discovered that they don't answer calls from non Nola numbers.
Huh, a lot of locals don't have local numbers and I've never heard of this as an issue before.
When we were there for my bday, we both called several times and couldn't get an answer. We called from the hotel phone and they picked up immediately.
I always just hailed a cab, or had the restaurant or bar I was at call them for me (which they were mostly happy to do).
New Orleans is so tourist focused (to the detriment of focusing on residents) that I have a hard time believing this is generally the case on a widespread basis. Not to dismiss your experience - but I don't believe that is a regular occurrence.
Again, to reiterate, many folks that live here (and call cabs regularly) have non-504 numbers.
I know! It was weird!
I have a non-local number and the only time I couldn't get anyone to pick up was 9 pm on NYE. I remember y'all being frustrated and having some weird experiences. I don't use cabs much now that I live here, but used them frequently when visiting and don't recall having those sorts of problems. There are also a number of new cab companies in town and they all take credit cards now (due to Super Bowl).
Lee, I also say no car. With cabs and the streetcar and us folks who live here, you should be pretty okay. Not only is parking a bitch, but walking back at night alone from your car to your hotel is probably not the best idea. The Quarter is in many ways the safest hood in town (see above re: tourist-focused) but some criminals are tourist-focused, too.
Yay for the mini-f2f in KC!!
Sooooo are we doing a dinner with amych thing on Sunday in the Mission is that still happening or whatever?
Speaking of San Francisco: what awesome (transportation-adjacent) places should I take my BFF when she and I are there next month? She's never been, and for me it's been a while since I did fun stuff (as opposed to work, or being at a conference all weekend, etc)
