Shit's all sorts of different now.

Question for DC-istas: We will be doing a lot of Metrorail travel while we are in DC. Is it worth the $47 to buy the 7 day pass or would it be cheaper to just pay as we go? We're staying in Rockville. The hotel has a shuttle to the nearest station and we will be using the Metro to get everywhere.

information libertarian

How many days will you be there? Rockville to the center of DC is $5 one-way, so each day's commute would be $10 if you only went to one place. If your trip is more then 3 days I would buy the pass.

(You can check Metro fares at their web site. Man they have gone up since I lived there!)

Shit's all sorts of different now.

We get in Saturday night and we leave Thursday, so we'll be using the pass for at least 4 days.

I think the pass is only good during certain hours, though--double-check, I remember the day pass was only good certain hours not sure about the weekly. Basically "Not during rush hour" which...doesn't leave you a lot of time, unless you're sleeping in and either coming back quick or staying til after dinner.

Shit's all sorts of different now.

Here are our options:

7-day Rail Fast Pass $47.00

Valid for seven consecutive days of unlimited Metrorail travel.

7-day Rail Short Trip Pass $32.35

Valid for seven consecutive days of Metrorail trips costing up to $3.25 during peak periods (weekdays 5:00-9:30 a.m. and 3-7 p.m.) or trips of any cost at all other times. If a trip costs more than $3.25 during peak periods, you may use the Exitfare machine to add fare. The pass will be returned to you for continued use during valid period.

Seems to me that if you are not planning to do rush hour travel to and from Rockville, the short trip pass will work, since most of your trips will be within the city. Be aware that the metrorail system is not really designed to move people around the city in an efficient way. If you want to talk about your itinerary, I'm happy to help plan. And of course, I want to see you when you're in town!

The 13th or 14th would be best for me, as the weekdays are orientation for my students. And a board meeting on Tuesday.

Buffista brunch on Sunday?

Sunday brunch should work for me ... as long as it's more or less accessible by public transit.
