I feel like people have been dissuaded from pimping at all because of a perceived need to be on the ground, have an intimate knowledge of a place, or write up 50 million things.
I can see that. However, I would say that the pimper/organizer should live in or have intimate knowledge of the city, but as long as there are Buffistas willing to assist, it's okay. Of course, that depends on the ultimate location, though. I would have been able to assist had the last F2F been in Baltimore, but wasn't able to help in RI.
Because when they don't the F2F sometimes doesn't go as well. The pimper doesn't know that although both hotels claim to be close to public transport, hotel A is a better transit line; or gets caught up in the newness of the city and isn't available; or where the best place to get stuff for the hospitality suite is (or even getting stuff for the suite); etc. There have been exceptions, of course, but history has shown that it goes more smoothly when the pimper is familiar with the city.
I would say if the pimper doesn't take responsibility for planning than someone else needs to at least sort of head up the committee so that we actually have hotels reserved and a prom set up, etc, etc.
I guess what I mean is that pimper does not have be the person responsible for organizing the affair, but there probably should be someone.
Hm, I suppose that the pimper and the organizer don't have to be the same person, but what if someone pimps, but no one wants to organize?
Then I pimp Albuquerque. I have a basic knowledge of the city as far as hotels and suchlike.
YAY ABQ! That (or Santa Fe) would be a really fun F2F, but I definitely would consider that West.
Well, if NM is West, CO should be West.
On practical grounds, I feel like I should be working on pimping Minneapolis. IIRC it is a hub for at least one major airline and therefore would be relatively easy for transport, in addition to being highly convenient for me and Daniel to get to. But I can't say I have intimate knowledge of the city, as I have only rarely ventured into it, and have never used public transport around it. Additionally, weather here in June is much more likely to be comfortable than in Texas (although we all know what a crap shoot it is to gamble on weather). I know there are zillions of wonderful, wacky, adventures to be had in the area, but I generally can't think of them off-hand.
