Oh hey, a local gathering! I'd like to come, too.
I'm booked with my Great Uncle and Aunt in Albany (near the North Berkley Station of the BART, I'm told--I have no idea where it is, aside from near a BART station)
Calli, can you confirm where, exactly, you will be? Because the Plaza BART is in El Cerrito, which is thisclose to Albany, whereas the North Berkeley BART station is very definitely not in either Albany nor El Cerrito. The Monte Cristo is over on University near the North Berkeley station.
t- I could pick you up at the Berkeley Amtrak stop on 4th St. if you want to coordinate. It's not worth it to try to do transit from Marin. Or: the Amtrak/BART exchange at Richmond is not bad. I used to BART to work from Richmond and it's an okay station, really.
t-, jz, poltercow - insent.
Just a thought, but there's Plearn for excellent Thai on Univ near Milvia, and what about one of the classic Berkeley restaurant/coffeehouses, Au Coquelet right at the corner of Milvia and Univ.? The food is pretty good and covers breakfast, lunch, dinner, desserts, and they serve beer and wine too. It's a good group place, just drag table together in the back part - my theater group does it all the time. No reservations, just show up.
But you were probably used to it. Fay's coming from Bangkok - the tropics.
This. When I lived in Scotland, it cracked me up to see my friend's Californian relations wrapped in sweaters and scarves and coats as we were enjoying what was, in our world, a nice bright Spring day. But it's all a case of what you're used to.
It took a minute to realize, but obviously you mean 42 C. That is just horrifying to me. I can't take much about 30 without getting discombobulated from the heat.
Yes - it's pretty hardcore, and it's year-round - I mean, 42 is extreme, but it's never less than low to mid 30s, I'd say, and the 'Cool Season' is characterised by the fact that it's tolerable to have the A/C switched off for sometimes an hour or more at a time. Which means that gradually my sense of what's normal, clothingwise, has shifted - you NEVER need a cardigan, let alone a jacket or coat, and you never need anything on your legs - most people wear flipflops year-round, and they're arguably the most sensible choice but I eschew them because they are (1) not pretty and (2) not comfortable. But if you're wading knee-deep down a street in the middle of a monsoon, feeling your satin ballet pumps being destroyed but reluctant to go barefoot over the God Knows What, you do find yourself appreciating the wisdom of the rubber flipflop wearers...
(And I'm not a sun lover either, so I stay indoors A LOT.)
...God, sorry, this is so dull and self-involved! Thank you for your patience with the trying-to-help-me-get-my-head-around-the-weather thing! We return you to your regularly-scheduled F2F talk.
When I was a kid, there were also things called opaques which were lighter than tights but heavier than pantyhose. I've never seen those in adult sizes, though, only little girl sizes.
(I detest pantyhose. They're itchy. If I must wear some sort of leg covering under a skirt, I'll first try leggings, and if I can't get away with that, then it's tights. Usually in fun colors or patterns, but I've also got some plain black ones for when I need to look professional.)
Calli, can you confirm where, exactly, you will be?
I'll be getting off the BART at the North Berkeley station on Sacramento. Maybe it's convenient for their Sunday plans? I don't know. But anyway, that's where I'll be.
Cereal with half-and-half. (What? It's gonna go off before I get back.)
I'll have my cell with me, as well as my laptop. And I'll be at a techie dogooder conference, so I should have pretty good access. But if anyone needs to catch me for last minute arrangements, my cell number is 919.491.2753. [I'll probably delete this tomorrow.]
No one answered about the reservation for Calli's brunch. Do we need one? If so, how many people are we going to be?
I'm probably going to end up at the North Berkeley station about 11:45, if anyone wants to meet there.
Perkins, they don't take reservations.
I am still not 100% commited . that makes me lame.
