I've been out of the abbey two days, I've beaten a lawman senseless, I've fallen in with criminals. I watched the captain shoot the man I swore to protect. And I'm not even sure if I think he was wrong.

From a NYT piece on the Obama family transition:

But in one respect, the Obamas’ family life will now become much easier. Since 1996, when he was elected to the Illinois State Senate, Mr. Obama has spent long periods away from home, and by his own admission, he is a part-time parent at best. The past six years have been a particularly punishing set of marathons, as he ran for a United States Senate seat, then spent weekdays in Washington, then traveled on the presidential campaign trail for nearly two long years.

His election will help realize a long-held, cherished family dream: For the next four years, the Obamas will finally eat dinner together.

"We are the Goon Squad and we're coming to town...Beep! Beep!" - David Bowie, "Fashion"

Maps that show were Hilary won 50%, 60% and 70% of the primary vote.

I'm curious, though, what the ratio of Dems to Repubs is in those areas. Just because Hilary won those big in the primary doesn't mean they are strong areas for the Democrats.

Yep. Allergies again.

We're very stretchy. - Connie Neil

Just got caught up from yesterday, and I had to share an Alabama anecdote from yesterday afternoon. I was trying to get information on an Alabama ballot issue that was still undecided, so I figured I'd try with the county whose taxes the issue was deciding. I called the Limestone County county registrar's office, and reached a woman with one of the deepest, slowest drawls I'v ever heard. When I asked her if they had any results on the issue, she said, "Wellll, I don' know anythin' myself, but someone just came in who might. Yo, Jim! D'ya know anythin' about the tax issue? No? Sorry, ma'am, we got nothin' here." So perfectly Southern!

Oh, and last night at the bookstore, I was getting fed up with all the people coming in looking for either the Tribune or the Sun-Times. People, you have to get your papers early in the morning after a big happening--don't you know that by now?!? We were sold out of our four copies of each within minutes after we opened that morning.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

No, I'm saying the implication is that those parts of the country are more racist.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

For the next four years, the Obamas will finally eat dinner together.

You know, unless he's busy being President. t /cynic

Obama's ripple effect on Chicago

re: The Kennedy Expressway:

Immediate impact: The airport closest to Obama's home, Midway, has no runway long enough to accommodate the 747 often used as Air Force One. Which means Obama is likely to land at O'Hare and head south on the Kennedy Expressway, causing annoying tie-ups. One alterative would be for him to travel by helicopter from O'Hare.

Dude. He can take a Blue Line train to the loop, and then transfer to... (I don't know where exactly in the South side he lives).

Re: Transit:

Long-term: State and local transit officials are buzzing about the federal grants that could come to northeastern Illinois with the help of the Obama administration. Some believe the potential Obama bonanza will far exceed the transit funding heyday years when Dennis Hastert, the Republican from Yorkville, was House speaker. But don't spend the money yet. An unanswered question is how Obama will rank transportation in relation to other pressing priorities. Do you recall Obama talking during the campaign about gridlock and about getting people out of their cars and into modern shiny trains and buses? Probably not.

Punishingly Intricate

You only have four copies of each paper? That's so sad.

I'm glad I kept my Sun subscription so I have the paper from yesterday but I really think I'm going to get rid of it now. It's so worthless AND isn't even running the current Doonesbury strips this week! it's running reruns for some unexplained reason. Annoying!

You were a wrong baby who grew up wrong. The wrong kind of wrong. It's better you hear it from a friend.

The AP is calling North Carolina for Obama, and Oregon for Merkley.
