So I have a bit of an update that is...if not hopeful, not quite as pessimistic.

I spoke to my regular vet this afternoon, and he's advocating for having the surgeon remove more tissue but leave Byron's leg intact. He says that this cancer rarely metastasizes (and if it does, it does so very slowly) despite being very invasive and aggressive locally. The tumor will likely recur in this same area, but it can be removed again and again. It really will depend on how far it has spread into his muscle. The surgeon tomorrow will make that decision.

T. (neighbor/landlady) is being very supportive and says that she would be happy to help us screen in the back patio so Byron can get outside time without actually being outside. I'm grateful for that.

It's a difficult process and tomorrow is going to be rough. I'm hopeful that I can get at least one more good year with him, though. I am prepared to do whatever the doctors think is best for him.

OK. Pickle definitions:

Dill pickles: brine may include vinegar. Definitely includes dill. Hence the name.

Sour pickles: brine does not include vinegar. Does not include dill. Does include salt, garlic, and other spices.

Half-sour pickles: pickles that have been soaked in the sour pickle brine for less time.

I have seen half-sour pickles at the supermarket in DC -- a brand called Ba-Tampte. I'm not sure if they're nation-wide, though. And the best pickles are the ones from a barrel.

She sounds wonderful and supportive, and this might be a good idea anyway -- as he gets older, tripod or not, it might be a good safe intermediate space, and handy for humans to have screened space too.

I'm glad to hear the possibilities are more hopeful and varied than they same, and my ongoing scritches to the kitty.

not getting aggressive with the maniac when he came back into the bar was the most zen thing I've ever seen. I complimented him on it. Man.

Mr. Jane is excellent with this. Granted, he's ginormous, but still, it's awesome to watch him calmly tell someone to leave, and then, as if he'd cast a spell on them, they just pay and walk out.

We've gotten to where we can work as a team now. I spot someone who's going to cause trouble. He watches and listens, and then asks them to leave before shit gets bad.

Yes, first, we never call them opossums, just possums. And they are not so closely related. Our possums are more closely related to kangaroos than American opossums.

Sort of how U.S. robins aren't the same bird as the U.K. robin.

Fun fact: Australia has about fifteen different species of robin, none of which are related closely to either the robin or the American robin.
