I put a lot of faith in Wolfe, seriously. For instance, he was on the first season of Andromeda, and some of the best seasons of DS9. So fingers crossed.

I'm not sure why Beta picks some people and not others because you'd think nearly everyone would have a bad incident or set of interactions that could torment them for life.

no. that's the frustration I currently have. We know this is an alien being, we do not know what shape it takes. It has been manipulating the space program for years.
Those who know about it do not quite know what it wants, I am not altogether sure why they comply.
