I'm going to put this here as well as over in Procedurals--Mo Ryan (the Tribune's Watcher TV blogger) has some sneak peek info on tonight's CSI ep, which is set at a SF convention. I was going to watch it anyway just because (a) it's CSI, and (b) it's the lab rats' ep for this season, but considering it's written by Weddle and Thompson, previously writing for BSG, and features Ron Moore and Kate Vernon as well as cameos by two other BSG people and tributes to BSG's score, well, I might be keeping it on my DVR!

So I saw "Caprica" - pilot episode. I was very disappointed. I also have to reflect on what I expected from this pilot. I hadn't read a lot about it ahead of time, which I think was a mistake. I did not understand WTF was going on in the show until about 30 minutes in.
I'm going to try to give my reactions without spoilers, but I'm not sure it would matter either way. Beau told me that certain events were spoiled by the Caprica promos, but I don't remember anything in the promos, so everything was a surprise to me. I will not go into anything in any specificity anyway.
I thought the pacing of the pilot was very labored - even boring. There are teenagers in the pilot and a LOT of focus on the teenagers - to my disappointment and irritation. Eric Stoltz does not bring his A acting game in this one, but the actress who plays his wife (featured on "Deadwood" and a very special ep of CSI) is fabulous. She needs to get more work, I just love her acting so.
There are three or so distinct plot elements that are independent of each other and that converge in a clunky way at one point - pretty unnecessarily. There is a LOT of religion in the pilot - far far more than I was expecting. I have to say, I don't understand the religious elements at all. I don't understand the nature of whatever conflicts arise and how culture informs this conflict.
In real life, religion doesn't come from nowhere and is embedded in culture. It would be nice if the discussion of religion wasn't abstracted out as a monotheism and polytheism debate only. I cannot imagine that a society as technologically advanced as the one portrayed would not have had deeper discussions of religion and what it means.
If you liked where the BSG finale went in terms of the religion aspects, I think you will like Caprica. I didn't care for this aspect of the finale and I think that's why I'm bothered with Caprica.

Looked her up, and while she was on CSI for a few eps, I can't find a DEADWOOD reference for her. Not being nitpicky - it's just I LOVE so many of the DEADWOOD actresses that I was curious.
