This is going to be an xpost (Natter and BS) because I honestly have no idea where this show belongs. I'd probably say it "transcends genre" if that phrase didn't make me grind my teeth - there's one blink-and-you'll-miss it brush with magical realism, but the bulk of the show is politics and family drama. On the other hand, it takes place in the fictional Kingdom of Gilboa, soooo....yeah. The show it most reminds me of is Rome.
Kings premieres on NBC in two weeks, and the promos have been at best confusing and at worst off-putting. But the show itself is AWESOME. I wish it were on cable where it would survive, because I have a feeling nobody will watch it due to NBC's total fucking up of the marketing effort and it will get canceled just as its getting interesting.
The worldbuilding in this show is astonishingly strong. The writing is solid, the characters well-drawn, and the acting is good across the board. And there's really nothing else like it on TV right now.
So far I've only seen the pilot - I have the next 2 eps as well, and if the show goes completely off the rails I'll take back everything I just posted. But I really hope it doesn't, because I want to know where this story goes.
I thought Roslin's grief at the end had something to do with her connection to Hera and the child being ripped away. Didn't she say Hera's name?

That's true; I'd forgotten that. Cylon blood, Hera's special, her blood cells project. Eh, why not. I survived Summers' blood, I can survive this.

Which I just realized puts it opposite TAR, ugh. (My DVR can record 2 channels at once, but I'd hate for anyone to have to choose!)

You know, I didn't realize I was mystified by this until you mentioned this. I had just sort of assumed that she was hearing the communications between Boomer and the CiC, but it was confusing as to where she actually was and if the information we were hearing was just being overlaid onto her scene, or if she was hearing it.
the ads for "Kings" are really bad.
I'm interested because I recognize a couple of the actors in the ads, but NBC fucked UP the promotion of the show unlike any I've seen in awhile.
Roslin shared the visions with Caprica, Athena and Hera and she
did
have Hera blood, but it has been quite awhile.
I think she was just tuned in enough to Hera and maybe still taking the vision inducing juice to sense when something was wrong.
I'm really intrigued by the concept for
Kings,
what with the alternate-universe/modern setting and the Shakespearean story-devices. I was flashing on Baz Lurhman's
Romeo + Juliet.

Huh. I saw a note somewhere talking about it--I wonder if it was on John Rogers' blog, since ita saw it too.
That Ian McShane is on the cast speaks well for it, but the marketing is exactly not the sort of thing to get me to tune in.
