Boxed Set, Vol. V: Just a Hint of Denial and a Dash of Retcon

A topic for the discussion of Doctor Who, Arrow, and The Flash. Beware possible invasions of iZombie, Sleepy Hollow, or pretty much any other "genre" (read: sci fi, superhero, or fantasy) show that captures our fancy. Expect adult content and discussion of the Big Gay Sex.

Marvel superheroes are discussed over at the MCU thread.

Whitefont all unaired in the U.S. ep discussion, identifying it as such, and including the show and ep title in blackfont.

Blackfont is allowed after the show has aired on the east coast.

This is NOT a general TV discussion thread.

"Fuck Western ideologically-motivated gender identification!" Sulu gasped, and came.

Thoughts on the 2008 Doctor Who Christmas Special:

t spoilers

Steampunk!Who - lovely notion. It was all very picturesque and festive - yay for that. Dervla Kirwan's always good value for money, and I had mighty lust for her frock. David Morrisey ditto, although not so much with the frock. Rosita (don't know the actress's name) was likeable enough, as was BoySidekickGuy. And the "sonic" screwdriver was HILARIOUS. Also? That whole Doctor/Not!Doctor vibe was more than a little slashy, imho, which is for the win. In terms of storytelling...well, the whole 'It's the next doctor....or is it??!!?' thing didn't really work, because it was so clearly going to be a red herring. However, it was quite charming - I'm just sorry that we'd all been spoiled for it by the trailers, because if we'd come to it cold I think it would have been much more effective.

Obviously Doctor Who is frequently - almost invariably, in fact, really quite silly. But I confess I found this episode fell at the sillier end of the spectrum, which is a shame. Also it had moments of quite awful tweeness - not, at least, any recurrance of the whole Jesus!Doctor business Rusty Davies seems so fond of, but the whole Tiny Tim Rescue scene was well nigh as cringe-inducing.

Sigh.

So - yay for the Doctor, and yay for the pretty scenery, but it wasn't particularly wonderful, as an episode. IMHO. Although I'm not immune to the appeal of Steampunk!GiantCybermanShipThing Versus Balloon, as a concept.

Oh - and Tennant did deliver that whole "....they break my heart" line in such a way as to make me go 'Aaaaaw', even though I generally kind of want to be all 'Enough with the emo, already, writer guys!' But - yeah. Bless.

Overall I'd give it seven out of ten.

Thoughts on the new Wallace and Grommit movie:

t spoilers

Fabulous wee comical details for the win! Grommit for the win - arguably the best acting ever seen from a small clay dog evah. Grommit getting some love interest - for the win! Fat lady being bitter and evil because she's fat... rather less for the win.

Now let us crush something soft and watch it fountain blood. That is a girlish thing to want to do, yes?

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

Fay, I feel like I was waiting my whole life to see a giant steampunk robot stomp on London.

It was a pretty entertaining romp, definitely better than last year's.

All is well that ends in pizza.

Very right, P-C.

The Steampunk Robot rocked.

Christmas Who: Oh, I really enjoyed it. I loved David Morrisey, I thought he brought some much-needed warmth and anti-cynicism. I also enjoyed the Doctor having a companion who was not a younger female (I know Donna wasn't "younger" - it was one of the things I liked about her too - though technically they're all younger, but... oh you know what I mean) .

Did anyone else really like the Infoport thingy showing all the other Doctors? Given that the new series usually references the previous incarnations only obliquely, I loved that this was completely explicit .

To understand what happened at the diner, we shall use Mr. Papaya! This is upsetting because he's the friendliest of fruits.

Does anyone know if/when the "Who" Christmas special will air here? Not a big one for aheming.

Also, am now fully caught up on "Battlestar Galactica." And ... wow. That's all I gotta say.

Nana korobi, ya oki. (Fall down seven times, stand up eight.) ~Yuzuru Hanyu/Japanese proverb

Neither SciFi or BBCA say anything about airing the Doctor Who special/s. Sciffy's schedule shows episodes of season 4 and season 2 airing through the end of January.

"What would it take to get your daughter to stop tweeting about this?"

I'm so glad Who aired. Now to watch it myself. Also--I no longer have buyers remorse about the SG-1 set. Rewatching it has reminded me that it was some damn fine entertainment.

Also, am now fully caught up on "Battlestar Galactica." And ... wow. That's all I gotta say.

What a ride, eh?
