So having not really known about Catherine Tate before Doctor Who would her becoming a companion be like the equivalent of, say, Tina Fey becoming the second in command on a new Trek show?
Yes. Pretty much.
Which is why I was pretty dubious initially, and watched her in the Christmas Special after Season 2 with a sense of "...but you're Catherine Tate. Am I bovvered?"
But then, to be fair, Billie Piper was just as famous, and much more of a figure of fun - honestly, I winced when I heard she'd been cast as the Doctor's assistant. But she did a cracking job, and really made a name for herself as an actress through that role (I know it wasn't her first acting role, but I think it's fair to say that she was still generally perceived as a has-been Britney wannabe who'd had an embarrassing whirlwind marriage to ginger minger gazillionaire Chris Evans. I still remember when she was a guest on his show and he was letching all over her - showering her with flowers and suchlike. She was about 18 at the time, and he would have been 34 or so. It was all a bit creepy, watching him put the moves on her live on air. And then her music career sort of vanished away, and it was all a bit pathetic.) But she's definitely had the last laugh! Well done, Billie!
Aaaanyway, yes - The Catherine Tate Show was enormously popular, and generated various catchphrases. It was a sketch show, featuring some painfully well-observed characters - Lauren the teenager, Nan Taylor (a cockney grandmother) and a very parochial middle class wife are the ones I'm aware of. It ran for 3 seasons, from 2004 or thereabouts, I think.
YouTube has a fair amount of her stuff online, I discovered while aimlessly poking around.
We also noticed in my household that Tate has a figure like a Real Woman, and was dressed very well for it, too.
Oh, yes. I think that's what I liked most about Tate as Donna. She wasn't young and she wasn't a sylph. She acted and looked like an adult, not a teenybopper. I found her character much more layered that Rose ever was. And minus the embarassing crush that Martha had on the Doctor.

Well, I do know that I really didn't love that Xmas special, and (and I don't think I'm the only one) who was less than thrilled that she'd be taking Martha's place (who I adored). But she won me over. I didn't HATE that Xmas special (especially since it showed Tennant's unforgiving side of the Doctor, and I DID like how Donna called him on it), but I couldn't see how she'd sustain. Which she did - superlatively!

I wish they would explore the Tardis more. I always liked it when they had budget cuts and just threw in random rooms.

Yes! This is the joy of fanfic, of course, or the novels. But I agree that they should do this onscreen more!
