Old English, the language of Beowulf, was a close cousin of Old German. Middle English, the language of Chaucer, kept some German-like pronunciation. For example, enough ended in that strangled Germanic K. IIRC, the scholarship that determined how Old and Middle English were pronounced, based on things like rhyme schemes, post-dates Ichabod.

I think the real world details bug more because some are just obviously mistakes instead of decisions. I'm actually fine with an AU version of Roanoke that was magically relocated to the Hudson valley by Pestilence. But it bothers me that Ichabod seems to take modern medicine in stride when he predates germ theory by almost a century.
