The more I learn, the more I realize how little I know.

Understanding Mark McManus in Taggart was a stretch for me, but listening to him was a large part of why I enjoyed the series.

I was immediately disappointed but the idea is growing on me.

I quite like Capaldi's accent and suspect that his broad film and tv experience has smoothed it out a bit.

Like Plei, I have always had a facility for understanding the songsaccents of my people, but I honestly don't think people will struggle with Capaldi's. It's much less 'burr-y' than even Tennant's.

I like the idea of an older Doctor, just for contrast and, though I have not liked one single Capaldi-played character, seeing interviews with him makes me think he can might be quite good.

For no particular reason, the fact that he's been a director (Oscar winning, as it happens) makes me hope he can make Moffat's stuff better.

HE has been my biggest disappointment so far.

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

I have not liked one single Capaldi-played character

Really? I've loved him in the three things (that I can remember) I've seen: The Pompei Who, The Torchwood mini, and The Hour. What haven't you liked?

The Angel Islington! (Oooh, time to rewatch Neverwhere.)

I haven't seen Neverwhere, though I would love to!!

My experience with him has been limited (extremely limited) to truly despicable creeps. And maybe a few too many hulu promos for The Thick of It.

Danger is my middle name, only I spell it R. u. t. h. - Tina Belcher.

I remember watching Rock Face and Hamish Macbeth and bemoaning the fact that neither was captioned because I couldn't understand half of the dialoge by certain actors.

I've been musing about whether or not Capaldi's previous role in The Fires of Pompeii will be touched on or ignored.

He _was_ plucked out of time by 10. Maybe, like in Highlander, the trauma kicked his Time Lordy-ness into play.

Okay, probably not.

Have any of the other Doctors appeared on the show before donning the mantle?

The lost sheep grow teeth, forsake their lambs, and lie with the lions.

IIRC, Colin Baker did.

Good one, Anne.

Via wikipedia:

At the time of Baker's casting as Davison's successor, he became the only "Doctor" actor to have appeared in the television series as another character prior to taking on the leading role. When Baker was cast to replace Davison, many fans cited that shooting scene in Arc of Infinity, prompting Baker to say jokingly that he got the part of the Doctor by killing the incumbent.

It seems that, if _his_ previous role was incorporated into his tenure, it would have appeared in this article.

Though, it seems like Capaldi's role was large enough and recent enough to be at least a bit awkward.

It would be great, and charmingly fan-served, to incorporate the previous role somehow.

This also reminds me of the mega crossover when 10 "met" Gwen from Torchwood and recognized her as the ghost channeler from 9's season.
