Boxed Set, Vol. V: Just a Hint of Denial and a Dash of Retcon

A topic for the discussion of Doctor Who, Arrow, and The Flash. Beware possible invasions of iZombie, Sleepy Hollow, or pretty much any other "genre" (read: sci fi, superhero, or fantasy) show that captures our fancy. Expect adult content and discussion of the Big Gay Sex.

Marvel superheroes are discussed over at the MCU thread.

Whitefont all unaired in the U.S. ep discussion, identifying it as such, and including the show and ep title in blackfont.

Blackfont is allowed after the show has aired on the east coast.

This is NOT a general TV discussion thread.

"We're all stories, in the end. Just make it a good one, eh?"

UK Who: One of my friends was complaining that we've seen this race three times before, so it's dull. I said, when before? Pertwee and Davison, he said. Decades apart? Not as boring as some recurrences. Cf. Daleks, Cybermen.

Not the best episode ever, but some wonderful moments and lines from the Doctor. How much did I love his "That's OK. I can't make a decent meringue" in response to the kid saying he had dyslexia? Rory was also great. I was wrong about him. He's turning out well.

Speaking of the Doctor, I think I'm finally in love with Eleven!

Agreed! He's growing into the role fantastically. I particularly love how old he's playing the Doctor. I remember the media asking whether Matt Smith would be able to convince us he was over 900 years old. He really does.

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

UK Who: According to Wikipedia, they've only appeared twice before. Regardless, that's hardly dull! Reading the Wikipedia article on the Silurians puts the Doctor's concern about killing them into new context -- despite the Doctor's best efforts, both previous encounters resulted in massive Silurian deaths.

Also, I really like the Nasreen Chaudry character. Her enthusiasm is infectious. I hope she sticks around.

Compassionately intolerant

My memory is crap. To what is it a call-back?

Jon, in the Library, 10 tells Donna that the sonic screw driver 'doesn't do wood .

She and Rory have very similar responses to that particular limitation.

Thanks, Bonny. I definitely did not remember that.

Jon, I couldn't find the clip, dammit, but here is what Wikipedia says: In "Silence in the Library", while trying to open a wooden door, the Doctor tells Donna that the sonic screwdriver won't work because the door is made of wood .

eta: Clippityclipclip here.

bonny: Ha. I hadn't made that connection. Thanks!

Also, I really like the... character.

Meera Syal ! She's brilliant. And I agree, the character is really interesting.

I couldn't place the guy playing the Grandad; I was getting a really strong Torchwood vibe off him, but also a Ruth Jones association. Turn out he was in the Torchwood episode about the time rift, playing the adult version of Ruth Jones's son. Thank you brain .

My PVR cut out just before the end (stupid BBC messing about with timings again); I assume that the cliffhanger was Amy about to be cut open with the Doctor approaching... ?

Anyway, I enjoyed this episode - again. Come to think of it, during the RTD years there was inevitably at least one ep which made me want to throw things at the telly, but there hasn't been one yet this season .

And isn't Matt Smith brilliant with kids? I loved the meringue line and his whole exchange with Elliot. Maybe his next companion should be under the age of 12 .

Fiona, the cliffhanger was also the Doctor telling Nasreen that there were probably a dozen or so Silurians down there, but they reach an overhang and there's a whole CITY of them.

hwæt

So they're NOT preempting next week's episode in the UK for Eurovision?
