Boxed Set, Vol. V: Just a Hint of Denial and a Dash of Retcon
A topic for the discussion of Doctor Who, Arrow, and The Flash. Beware possible invasions of iZombie, Sleepy Hollow, or pretty much any other "genre" (read: sci fi, superhero, or fantasy) show that captures our fancy. Expect adult content and discussion of the Big Gay Sex.
Marvel superheroes are discussed over at the MCU thread.
Whitefont all unaired in the U.S. ep discussion, identifying it as such, and including the show and ep title in blackfont.
Blackfont is allowed after the show has aired on the east coast.
This is NOT a general TV discussion thread.
If the Secretary is Alterna-Walter, it's even more John Noble goodness ahead. He does Tragic-Sweet-Walter so nicely, but then there are the flashes of Brilliant-Ruthless-Walter, which is even nicer.
It's almost like realizing that Angelus really is just that evil and seeing Boreanaz having a whole hell of a lot of fun.
Joshua Jackson is pretty good, but I think John Noble is fuelling this one all by himself. It's almost down to reaction shots from everyone else.
30 minutes into DW:
eeeeeeee! ::hides under covers::
Doctor Who, ep 4: There were some genuinely terrifying moments in that. I screamed several times when Amy was watching the recording of the Angel. After that it felt like the Angels were being a little over-used, and becoming a bit less scary as a result. As with the Vashta Nerada, the less you see of Moffat's evil creatures, the more terrifying they are. Loved the 'stone hand' discussion between Amy and the Doctor. They're both starting to come into their own as characters.
In plot arc thoughts: River's seen many faces of the Doctor. How many seasons are they going to string us out for on this one? I'm too immature to deal with a mystery that's going to last for many seasons. (With the possible exception of LOST.) Where does she get all the info in the book from? I get that she's been collecting it a long time, but she seems to be discovering it along with the Doctor. And there's an awful lot of information in that little book. That said, she's awesome and I want her to come back often.
Dr. Who (The Beast Below): Loved it! It did take a while to get started, but as soon as Amy started snarking with the little girl about Scotland leaving Starship UK behind for its own and breaking out her set of lockpicks, I was on board. And Liz Ten does rule. I thought the idea of the Doctor being a running story in the ruling family's personal family history was great, going all the way back to Liz One ("As for the Virgin Queen? You naughty boy!"). Oh, and nice to find out that there hasn't been another Victoria (no numerical distinction for the 19th century one).
Seska, regarding
River's dairy:
I don't think she's
"discovering" any info in it.
Rather, she's
trying to piece together how it fits in his timeline.
That is, she's trying to figure out
what the Doctor knows and what he doesn't (because it hasn't happened to him yet).
Actually, I think this is a good challenge/learning experience for Joshua Jackson, who is probably used to carrying everything with his charm. Peter is charming, but there is more, and John Noble is Brilliant.
New Who (UK):
Creeeeeeeeepy! Especially the decaying faces of the angels -- man, and I thought those things couldn't get any scarier! I'm a little unclear on why exactly all those people are there or why they're going after the angel on the ship, but maybe things will be made clearer next week. And we're back in the 51st century again? Well, I guess we'd have to be, if that's River Song's time.
Things I liked:
the Doctor biting Amy, the line about Virginia Woolf, the needle-in-a-haystack bit. The reveal about the angels all around them. Scared Angel Bob! Aw!
This season so far
still feels a bit like a rehash of the last few seasons -- repeated characters, enemies, even some of the lines in this episode sounded like echoes of dialogue from episodes past, especially between River Song and the Doctor. I find myself wishing they'd branch out a little more. But, on the other hand, I like revisiting the weeping angels (unlike the Daleks, who are entirely played out, IMO), and I like that we're getting to see a very different side of River Song.
Is there a reliable source to watch the Doctor Who Confidentials?
Who episode 4: this was a definite
behind the sofa job, but I do have one criticism. I thought the Angels couldn't even move when they can see each other, hence the face covering and the loneliness. Then why were the approaching from all sides in the caves? I do hope they retcon that one away next week
.
Otherwise
great stuff. I wonder when the Doctor is going to warm to River Song, at the moment she mostly just gets on his nerves, I think. Must be tough to get to know someone if you're already aware you're going to marry. And I do love the cheek of saying that nearly 50 years of Tardis noise comes from him leaving the brakes on. You just know half the audience was saying "I love that noise!" along with the Doctor
.
Really liked
Amy this week, have completely warmed to her, she really is good (like the Doctor says)
