Boxed Set, Vol. V: Just a Hint of Denial and a Dash of Retcon

A topic for the discussion of Doctor Who, Arrow, and The Flash. Beware possible invasions of iZombie, Sleepy Hollow, or pretty much any other "genre" (read: sci fi, superhero, or fantasy) show that captures our fancy. Expect adult content and discussion of the Big Gay Sex.

Marvel superheroes are discussed over at the MCU thread.

Whitefont all unaired in the U.S. ep discussion, identifying it as such, and including the show and ep title in blackfont.

Blackfont is allowed after the show has aired on the east coast.

This is NOT a general TV discussion thread.

Shir, do you consider the reveal in the 8th Doctor TV movie to be canon?

Shir - Nov 18, 2009 7:40:22 am PST #10924 of 30001
"And that's why God Almighty gave us fire insurance and the public defender".

Scola, I'm a new fan - I only know the new series. So I have only a general, but not specific, idea of what you're talking about.

I really should find a way to get all those past seasons. And then find the time to watch them.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

I have little interest in the past seasons because the fact that the Doctor is the Last of the Time Lords is so integral to the character and why I love him for me. I'm sure I would enjoy them, but I feel like I would be less invested.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

The previous seasons are very different. They were targeted to me at the age I was when I was watching them, it felt, and current who is perfectly appropriate for me at 40. Watching the old stuff is at least partially an exercise in nostalgia--there's not as much of a premium on emotional arcing and there's very little shipping or angsting and absolutely no Captain Jack.

"We are the Goon Squad and we're coming to town...Beep! Beep!" - David Bowie, "Fashion"

Watching the old stuff is at least partially an exercise in nostalgia--there's not as much of a premium on emotional arcing and there's very little shipping or angsting and absolutely no Captain Jack.

With Sarah Jane, have they brought to the text what was mainly a current of subtext (i.e. she was (is?) in love with The Doctor, or at least seriously crushing), or were they explicit about that even then. It's been literally decades since I saw any of those, and I can't remember.

I also can't believe no channel has started airing the old stuff. If BBC still has the rights, you'd think it would be a natural for them on BBCA.

"And that's why God Almighty gave us fire insurance and the public defender".

I just want to know more about the background story. For Captain Jack, I can (in fact - I should) watch Torchwood.

§ ita § - Nov 18, 2009 8:06:14 am PST #10929 of 30001
Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Torchwood has its own set of rewards and frustrations. I would recommend it.

There's a ton of specific monster background (Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarans) to be gotten in the old episodes, so you might want to seek those out specifically. But even then, not all the Dalek episodes are equally relevant.

It's been literally decades since I saw any of those, and I can't remember.

Sarah Jane was before my time, so I'm not as up on her. I've been catching reruns via Netflix very randomly, and little with her.

Shir, there's also the Sarah Jane Adventures for texture.

"I remember when they eventually introduced that drug kingpin who murdered people and smuggled drugs inside snakes and I was like 'Finally. A normal person.'” —RahvinDragand

Frank, I don't think they ever explicitly said that Sarah Jane's feelings for the Doctor were more than platonic friendship back in the day. But it felt absolutely true to the character in "School Reunion" that she'd never married thanks to having met him.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

If BBC still has the rights, you'd think it would be a natural for them on BBCA.

BBCA is only tangentially part of the BBC - it's part of BBC Worldwide. (I could go into detail about the relationship between BBC, BBC Worldwide, and Discovery, but then everyone in this thread would fall asleep. Suffice to say, it's complicated.)

Anyway, the short version is that BBCA has to pay for everything that airs on their network, and they don't necessarily get first dibs or a better deal on BBC content than other American broadcasters. (Which is why SciFi had Who first, and why BBCA also airs non-Beeb shows like Footballers Wives.)
