In mememe news, my workplace is getting crazy again just as I thought it was going sane. Without going into too many specific and identifying details, it's just...ugh. People storming out of meetings. People pulling manipulative bullshit to try to get their way and split the factions even more than they already are. Me feeling completely caught in the middle. I had sort of an inner dialogue going with one of the characters in my WIP (yes, I regularly talk to my imaginary people) wherein he pointed out that in his day someone would've been challenged to pistols at 20 paces by now, and maybe that wasn't ALWAYS a bad thing. Me: "Are you kidding? They'd all want me to be their second."
Apparently the powers that be over us are bringing in a consultant later this month to try to sort things out. If there's not real progress soon I'm putting my resume back out there, because this place has gone NUTS. At least everyone respects me, with one possible exception, and she's not my boss, which is an improvement over the last job, but STILL. I'd like to go to work and do my job without feeling like I need to duck and cover every time the senior staff are in the same room.
Oh goodness, I am so sorry to hear about the coworkers' deaths. That is disconcerting and upsetting.

Hil, that's insane! Nice to have such a speedy labor, I bet. Wow. Also, I hear you on the students expecting intso-email no matter when they send it. I've got mine trained now, but it took a little while.
Kristin, I fully admit to being more than a little jealous of you today. Hearing Kushner talk has to have been an amazing experience.
It was...there aren't words. Best speaker I have ever heard. I think I am a little bit in love with Kushner, gay or not. Also? I have his email address (!!). I will not abuse it. But I want to. A little. I have become a Kushner fangurl, who knew?

A friend of mine back in Ohio had a similar sitch (did incredibly well in the new position, loved the job, then got a new boss who created an adversarial atmosphere in the office). My friend just got let go this week and she's actually relieved so she can speed up her job search.
I've been up to my eyeballs busy and I really need to get to bed because we've got a speech therapist coming over tomorrow morning to test Liv. Not that I'm worried about her testing--but I am worried aobut my pit of a house and having strange people come into it.

My personal favorites are the ones who email me with something like, "I don't understand #2. Am I supposed to add x?" Fairly impossible to answer if I don't have the textbook in front of me. And if they email me on a weekend, it's a pretty sure bet that I don't have the textbook with me.
This is the first time in a while where I've been teaching a class where calculators are allowed on tests. (I get to set the calculator policy this time. I've got no problem with calculators.) I realized that I had to make a rule that they can't use the calculator functions on their cell phones, they've got to use a calculator without communication abilities. (Yes, the HP graphing calculators have infrared links, but that can't be done inconspicuously during a test.) (I was thinking about saying no graphing calculators, but I decided to see how it goes this time.)

In mememe news, I am writing a blog post for our library blog about chess. Some how I seem to have gotten myself into a really complicated blog post - lots of links and research. and I chose this. I'd really like to get the basics done tonight so I am fact checking and polishing tomorrow, but ummm... this is hard.
Rough post finished. tomorrow I get to clean it up - before I go to work?I guess it doesn't have to be before work, but I would like it done before anyone tries to ask me about it.
gah. toddler wants juice at 3:30 am = mom still awake at 5 am. gah.
we had a rough kid night too. Ellie wet the bed but didn't tell me. Instead we both fell back asleep with her leaning on the bed standing next to me. I didn't realize she was wet until I woke up an hour later, picked her up, and her legs were freezing
