Goodness, I'd think it's time for the two of you to band together in rebellion. Because the mandatory gift-for-boss, and particularly the monetary amount (about which you had no input), is bullshit.
Seriously, what can they do to you if you just refuse to chip in?
Steph speaks for me. Honestly. (except I don't think not having kids makes one any more obligated or wealthy...says the woman still seething after being told...good lord, 17 years ago...that a coworker deserved a lower interest rate on the same car because 'he had a family to support')
How much worse, or insensitive can coworkers be if you don't participate in such idiocy?
It just frosts my hide when people are pushed into these assumed 'have too's. Joke 'em!
tiggy, I don't know if you want anymore unsolicited advice...I'm sorry that your boss is so clue-adverse/conflict-adverse that he has no idea that this causes conflict. It also sounds like it's not worth the effort to lean on him to get him to do something about it.
Given that, I hope whatever you do is something you can tolerate one way or another.
Joke 'em!
If they can't take a....? (I say that often, and no one ever gets it.)

Ooops. I apologize for my call to arms, then, if you weren't wanting advice.
(Although I often come across as a huge dick, I don't mean to be. Well, okay -- maybe 10% of the time I do mean to be. But this wasn't one of them.)

Did you see my Bitches post Steph? Now, if you say you are left handed and an Aries, Ima haveta start believing in the whole separated by birth...and a decade at least...theory.
No, Steph! I wasn't chiding (please forgive). I was just thinking about how aggravating of an experience it sounds like for tiggy and how the solution seems so easy to me (and us) but we don't have to work with those people for the rest of the year.

This is a huge learning for me personally...I don't do it professionally, oddly enough...but making assumptions about what is easy is one way I can be terribly obnoxious. Got to learn how to be supportively irely, in a non-off putting way.
eta: and frankly, I'm so irefilled about my own sitch that I've got plenty to spare for anyone who needs a good footstamping, whiney fit. I'm here for you...and should probably go soak my head.

Heh -- right-handed and a Cancer on the cusp of Gemini. But I'm not discounting the possibility of a shared brain....

Oh, I didn't think you were; your post just made me consider that I might have been adding to a pile-on in a situation where tiggy already has enough aggravation.
My boss ismaking me look crazy. Or maybe I am making me look crazy. Or maybe the situation is just crazy.
... I think it is the latter, and I'm not in the mood for crazy right now.
