so i'm rewatching with commentary and they keep talking about how this was the last episode their filmed. But there's 2 more episodes? Was this initially supposed to be the season finale and the air order was changed after cancellation?

"The Message" was one of three episodes that never aired, but I don't think it was ever intended as a season (or series) finale.

Didn't they say that they got the word about cancellation when they had nearly finished filming the Message? I seem to recall something about the music being specially composed...and it very well could be that I dreamt that.

I remember a comment from Edmondson to that effect--maybe on commentary, or in an interview. But I do remember him saying he was composing music for Tracy's funeral, but it felt like--and not just to him--that it was a dirge for the series.
