Wow, Mark wrote a wonderfully cogent review of Shindig. Nice.
Thanks for the links.

Anyone know where to find Firefly DVDs cheap?
The least expensive I could find was a site called Hot Movie Sale. They have it for $29.27, but they are discounting $5 off your first order, and giving free shipping on the first item you order. So, $24.27. I hadn't realized that the price had gone up again.
We just started a rewatch and are up to Shindig -- we made it through the first 4 episodes tonight. Because Firefly episodes are like potato chips or M&Ms. You can't have just one.
It seems like Firefly dvds go on sale with some regularity.
Walmart had the set for $20 last night.
I'm rewatching at the moment. Good times. Any tips for persuading The Girl to watch? She doesn't generally like sci-fi - the minute there's a spaceship in shot, she's lost interest. Despite the Whedon geniusness of things.
Some people have had good luck starting with "Out of Gas".
That's not a bad idea. You can hear classic Joss all the way through that one.
We started Daniel's mother with "Our Mrs. Reynalds". While "Out of Gas" is sheer brilliant television in so many ways, it might do to start with an ep. a bit less focused on the ship.

But it's so Tim.
When pimping Firefly, I avoid using the words 'space' and 'scifi' and focus on the relationships and humor. I'll describe the lead as a flawed but lovable hero and then describe the scene where Mal is dueling with Inara's client in Shindig.
The being in another world aspect of it is really incidental to the interplay of the characters.
