My dad is a bigger geek than I will ever be. Last I checked (15 years ago) the local natural sciences museum still had the 3d moon model he built in high school.
'First Date'
Natter 54: Right here, dammit.
Off-topic discussion. Wanna talk about corsets, duct tape, or physics? This is the place. Detailed discussion of any current-season TV must be whitefonted.
That's really cool, Sara. More the Sputnik than the moon model. Heh.
me too, sarameg, me too.
The first picture taken from space
In 1946, taken at an altitude of 65 miles from a camera in a V-2 rocket.
Fred Rulli was a 19-year-old enlisted man assigned to the recovery team that drove into the desert to retrieve film from those early V-2 shots. When the scientists found the cassette in good shape, he recalls, "They were ecstatic, they were jumping up and down like kids." Later, back at the launch site, "when they first projected [the photos] onto the screen, the scientists just went nuts."
ARGH! I just spoiled myself for Top Chef via Gawker. I was being so good at avoiding places I thought would spoil me! Bah. Maybe I can put it out of my mind before the weekend.
Scrabulous is a game on facebook. It's similar to Scrabble, and you can play with anyone else who has the application.
I adore it.
It's not just similar to Scrabble. I wonder how they're getting away with that. It's Scrabble but not in real time (though a friend and I are thinking about giving that a shot--Yahoo has a game a little less similar to Scrabble that was real time. Haven't played it in yonks, though).
The work issue I ended up being adult on was one where a coworker added his boss and mine to the recipients and got snappy with me. I almost got involved (in a land war in Asia), but remembered that he's never anything but polite on the phone or in person, so I put the priority of getting information ahead of the priority of smacking him down in public.
You think if you'd given me what I wanted right away I'd had to have sent you 13 emails? Not doing this for my health or my looks.
Grr. Still had to send a butt covering email to my boss, though, and that stings.

Huh.
Sorry. I'm seriously sleep deprived right now and I think that if I wait another hour or so, Kristin's Ambien-induced post will make total sense to me.
Apparently when Drew got home after midnight, I was slumped up against the headboard. The TV was on, the lights were on, and my glasses were on. He tried to talk to me, and that's when (he says) I drooled all over myself.
Ambien has now officially become an Emergencies Only drug.
I have pretty bad insomnia issues, but Ambien scares me. I think it clearly shouldn't be taken by anyone caring for small children. In fact, it pretty much scares me from taking any other Rx sleep aid either. For now I'm stuck with melatonin.
