Just caught up with Elementary. I have to say I continue to like the way they play against the Doyle Canon. They have not attempted to transmigrate the soul of Doyle's Holmes to someone living today. They have tried to imagine what kind of person in today's world could do the same sort of work Doyle's Holmes did. And if you listen carefully this Sherlock is constantly saying things that are directly lifted from Doyle's. So it is not necessarily that they don't understand Doyle's Holmes but that they are not trying to bring Doyle's Holmes into our time, but create a Holmes in our time, and choosing to make him very different from the original, not only in details, but in fundamentals, in the type of person he is.

This thread is for procedural TV, shows where the primary idea is to figure out the case. [NAFDA]
Elementary: I really thought they were going to stay away from cannon characters other than Holmes and Watson, so I was surprised to hear them say the name Irene last week.

I actually got excited and clapped my hands when Watson said her name.

I'm not saying I'm disappointed, just surprised and maybe a bit skeptical. I wonder if this means we should expect Moriarty as well.
I thought it would rock if Alastair turned out to be Moriarty.
With the screwed up relationship Sherlock has with his father, I think Mycroft would have a lot of potential to be an interesting addition as well.
Castle has some really funny scenes. The one with the songwriter was hilarious.
Yeah, it was. The "cut to black - musical sting" business cracked me up every time.
I like Castle best when it is being funny. Not that I don't get why they need to mix in some seriousness. But I love that they sometimes approach classic screwball comedy.
