The first wife is her mother, I think. The second wife was mentioned only in passing in the first season and this week is the most they've talked about her.
The first wife is, indeed, Alexis' mother, and is a dilettante actress.
The second wife we met in the first episode, and is also Castle's agent. So she's been around, just not on camera.

It's pretty much exactly the same. It hit its niche running, and has pretty much stayed there. Which is not a bad quality in a confection.
