I think Brennan is supposed to be Aspie -- the show is not consistent, but I think that's why she's supposed to be a bit clueless in actual human interaction, despite being scientifically familiar with it.

I've met people who come off as Asperger's and never as haughty as her. Narcissists, sure, even when they were right about great they were--it's just how pleased she is about much greater she is than other people. She couldn't be friends with Booth if he was a guy because she'd be worried he'd be prettier than her? Off the high horse, lady. Your looks aren't that important.

And I can't reconcile the writing of the people who see fundamental flaws in other people's interactions writing them captivatingly. She doesn't seem to get motivation. What's a good murder case without one?

I can't really defend how inconsistent her character is, but I think they started the show with this Kathy Reichs character -- a forensic anthropologist who writes books and teams up with a more empathetic FBI agent -- and over time they upped the conflict between her approach and Booth's. She's the scientist who doesn't understand human emotions, etc., but they couldn't drop the book writing stuff. On the other hand, I bet Patricia Cornwell is a nightmare.

This doesn't strike me as unusual, having an acquaintance who is almost certainly on the spectrum, and widely nicknamed "the asshole of Harvard." (Which is saying something! But he did apparently write one of the best English-language books on Buddhism, which means he is doing fine, even without empathy.)

But was the book about multiple characters and motivation? I'm probably asking too much of bestsellers--I hear the Nick Castle book is edited like crap and it's at #11.

Nor me. The person I know who is on the spectrum greatly exaggerates his abilities, sharing the haughty tendency, whereas Brennan is written as actually brilliant.
