I'm pretty sure Goren doesn't know where his nephew is. Donnie's mother said she hadn't see him for a year. I think he's been missing since he broke out of jail.
That must have been Warren Leight's last episode as writer and showrunner, before he left to produce In Treatment. He pretty much cleaned the slate for the new guy.
