I think we are done here.
It is up and open - I am drunk on power.
I'd like to make a new year's resolution for the board. I'd like to move to the new ruby on rails codebase.
I need to update the versions of some of the dependencies, but not really much else. I think moving is important so that registration will work again, logging out will work, the gaping security holes are fixed, and the board will work better on mobile.
Here's what I'd like to do:
1. Start posting warnings about the change all over the place at b.org. It is important that either you know your password or that your profile addy is good in order to keep your current account on the new board.
2. Create a Digital Ocean account for the Buffistas so that the site isn't on my account.
3. Create an Ubuntu 18.04 (or 20.04 if we move in May or later which seems likely) VM and get the board software all installed and working.
4. Set the address of the new board as www.buffistas.me, get a cert, and set up encryption.
5. Create/move the static pages like FAQ, how-to, site etiquette, links, etc... The new board has the ability to edit these pages online in the admin section, but some may require more formatting than that, so there could be some work there which could be started before step 2.
6. Migrate data to the new board. (I've done this a couple of times already so the process appears good.)
7. Make a webpage at www.buffistas.org to redirect to the new site.
8. I don't know about the registration of buffistas.org, but it is registered by dreamhost we'd need to move registars.
9. Reset the DNS servers for buffistas.org to Digital Ocean. Then get certs, and add set up the webserver to also accept www.buffistas.org and buffistas.org.
10. We are moved and modernized.
Is this something we can get done in 2020? Does that plan sound okay?
Sounds good to me, Gud. But it also sounds like a lot of work. Is this something we can help you with? Even the less code-y people (like me) could help with things like announcements.
I have all the registration info, when the time comes for that.
Cool. I think I'll look at starting the move process in May so that Ubuntu 20.04 will be out. That will be good for 5 years of security updates.
Remember, no nattering or non-announcements in Beep Me.
With the new board, there isn't any technical reason to cap thread size, but I kinda like the idea of still doing it. However, we could change the cap to... well, whatever we want.
Picking thread names is fun times. I wouldn't want to give that up. As it is it takes too long! We need to talk more!
