But I think film is paced so differently that you couldn't get away with it. There's no way for the audience to flip back and forth to make sure they didn't misread and then sit with it for awhile before moving on
This is very true. When I re-read the graphic novel recently, I hit the splash page with the GIANT PSYCHIC SQUID and burst out with "Squiiiiiiiids frommmmmm Spaaaaaaaace!" Pete threw a pillow at my head, IIRC.

It... kind of looks like a video game? Admittedly, a pretty awesome video game, but I'm not really bowled over by it.

Yeah, I just watched it, and it looks like Little Big Planet meets The Matrix. The graphics are gorgeous, but it's not quite my thing.
It is clearly my kind of thing, however.
Why, why, why? No one needs to remake Bye Bye Birdie. FOR REAL, Hollywood-type people. Young Ann-Margaret? Janet Leigh? Dick Van Dyke? Come on, it's perfect!
