Buffista Movies 6: lies and videotape

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

Oh! Yes, I saw The Killing a while back, and enjoyed it a lot. It's a bit less heartbreaking because of the noir-ness, but yeah, the ending is just crushing. The line between comedy and tragedy is definitely pretty thin in his movies, but.. in PoG, when they're tying the upright stretcher to the post? And pinching his cheek? GAH.

Then during the scene at the end with the German girl, I was sure something awful was going to happen. And instead it was only horribly sad, so...I guess that was a relief, but like I said: good Halloween movie.

I still have to see Killer's Kiss, but I think that's next in my queue. And then I think I can collect my Kubrick Merit Badge, woo!

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Rumours that the ending of Watchmen has been changed.

The German girl ended up becoming Mrs. Kubrick, fyi.

I've always thought they'd kinda have to (given what the discussion is about what's being changed). And honestly, what they are changing (if they are) was always my biggest problem with the book.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

As long as they don't change the spirit of the ending, I wouldn't be too terribly surprised if the whole psychic space octopus thing was, let's say, tweaked.

Except if there's no psychic space octopus then there's no island full of artists & writers creating the space octopus and then how exactly does anyone even find out what's going on?

I'm not sure there's a way to "tweak" the ending that doesn't change the entire story. Granted, that particular plot thread is the one that always snaps for me as is.

Hm, that's a good point. I'm not sure.

The artist formerly associated with cupcakes.

Pete is hugely annoyed that the giant space octopus might be gone.

You should know I'm a big deal in the Resistance.

I'm still optimistic. I understand the problem with how do they find out about the plot without the artists' colony? But I think post-911 we know now that a huge tragedy befalling New York isn't enough to unite the world. I skimmed the screening reports so I don't know whether that issue has been dealt with or if they just went with an alternate monster for the space-squid . I may or may not be able to make it all the way to march without finding out.

Laga, I hear you on the post-911 problem but keep in mind that it wasn't just an attack on New York, it was an attack on New York from an absolutely outside the earth threat. Given how they presented international relations in the novel, I think a conventional attack on New York wouldn't have done anything but escalate things.
