I thought that at first too, P-C, but going back and rewatching, there are signs of it in the pilot and first couple of eps as well.
Cable Drama: Still Waiting for the Cable Guy to Show Up with the Thread Name...
To be determined... (but it's definitely [NAFDA])
Frankly, that's often the way that you see alcoholism. You don't really notice how much someone is drinking for a while, and then you suddenly think. Wow, Nate's drinking a lot.
Yeah, but given the whole vibe of the show, I wish it had been more "Nick & Nora" and less of a "thing".
I agree, megan. They played it a little for laughs (loved Parker's assertion that he was getting creepier), but when it got Very Serious, it didn't feel right.

yeah, that would have been nice, but we don't allow that anymore.
Nate drinks not just in a few episodes, but in every single one.
I liked the way the alcoholism was done, and it made sense to me that every victory for the team might make his drinking just a little bit work. Nate can fix everyone else's life, but his son is still gone.
It's a nice note for his character. If he can have a drink in his hand, he does. And even when it's demonstrated that it's a problem, physically, at least, he goes right on like he has been, same functional brokenness, not ready to fix. I like it.
John Rogers said that as a TV writer he was very qualified to write a functional drinker. I was surprised to realise he'd been drinking every episode--just another way rewatching the entire season paid off. I can't say it's the show's fault I didn't notice the first time round.

Sort-of how Rusty is always eating in Ocean's 11.
