Plus, the meaning of the Mets banner changes in meaning during the ep from grim reminder of Lane to something like a hint that Don will make a triumphant turn around as the '69 Miracle Mets did.

Yeah, that was the callback. That pitch was Don's calling card for years and in that pitch the carousel symbolizes family and love and childhood and wonder, so calling back to it with lyrics about how actually a carousel symbolizes futility because you never get any close to the thing you're chasing...brilliant.
